The Goat and the Monkey

Hello everyone,

Today I am going to tell you the story of the goat and the monkey.

This story was told to me by my late Aunt Khatija. She loved reading and telling stories. This is one of the stories she told me.

In this story the monkey tries to cheat and become king. The way he is exposed is very funny. I had laughed when she had told me this story.

So read on find out what happens to the monkey.

THE GOAT AND THE MONKEY

Long, long ago, the animals in the animal kingdom gathered together every year to decide who would be king that year.

One year, the lion was the king. Now, the animals had gathered to decide who would be king the following year. After a long discussion, all the animals decided that it was the goat’s turn to be king. On hearing this, the monkey got angry, as he was expecting to be king that year.

“I do not wish to offend you, Your Majesty,” he said, “but don’t you think that I should be king this year. After all, I have more intelligence than my friend, the goat.”

The goat got angry at this.

“No, no!” the goat protested, angrily. “I should be king this year. Look at me! I have such beautiful horns and such a beautiful beard. Besides, everybody has decided that I should be king, so there!”

All the animals cheered at this. The monkey was furious, but he
knew it would be useless to argue with the animals. So he said no more. But he made up his mind to do something about it.

Early next morning, all the animals began to gather at their meeting place. At last, everyone had arrived, except the goat and the monkey.

Soon, the monkey arrived, but nobody recognized him! He had tied a pair of horns on his head and stuck a beard on his chin. Everyone became silent when they saw him. No-one could decide who this strange creature was. Everyone stood there staring at the monkey. As last, the king found his voice and asked, “Who are you?”

“I am the goat, of course,” he said, “can’t you see my lovely horns and my beautiful beard? I have come to be your king.”

The animals looked at each other, very much puzzled. At that moment the goat arrived. Everybody looked from the goat to the monkey and from the monkey to the goat.

The goat looked at the monkey in amazement and asked, “Who are you?”

“I am the goat. I have to come to be your king,” said the monkey impatiently.

The goat could not believe his ears. He became angry indeed and started to argue with the monkey.

At last, the lion silenced everyone with his loud roar.

“There is only one way to find out who the real goat is, and that is by fighting,” said the lion. “The one who wins will be king!”

The monkey got really frightened now. He knew that the goat had really strong sharp horns and he didn’t stand a chance against him. But he couldn’t back out now, either. If he did everybody would know that he was a liar. So he decided to go along with it.

The lion stood them far apart. Soon, he gave a loud roar as a signal for the fight to begin.

The goat rushed at the monkey before he had a chance to move, and gave him a real hard butt in the stomach! Ouch! That really hurt him!

And, my, oh my! You should have seen the monkey. His beard had come off, and horns that he had tied on his head fell over his eyes! He really looked a sight!

When the monkeys saw this, they started to laugh at him because he looked so ridiculous lying there on the ground! Suddenly, he stood up and ran away as fast as he could. So the goat became king that year after all.

The Lion and the Rabbit

     Hello children,

Today is Red Nose day and so I have brought you a very special story. It is about the lion and the rabbit.

As you all know that a rabbit is a very cunning animal. It can get out of any situation with his quick wit. Read on and find out he gets out of a very tight and dangerous situation in a very funny way.

THE LION AND THE RABBIT

The lion was always trying to catch the rabbit, but the rabbit was too smart for him and somehow or the other always got away.

One the lion decided to lie in wait for him near a bush. As soon as the rabbit passed the bush the lion caught him.

“Aha! At last,” said the lion, triumphantly. “I have caught you at last. You won’t be able to get away this time.”

The rabbit struggled in vain. He just could not get away from the iron grip of the lion.

“Please, let me go, Mr. Lion,” he said, desperately.

But, the lion tightened his grip even more and would not let the poor rabbit go.

“You know what I’m going to do?” he asked the trembling rabbit. “I’m going to make a rabbit pie. No, no. I’ll make a rabbit stew. Yes, that is what I’m going to make.”
The slurped and passed his tongue over his lips greedily. The rabbit trembled even more and began to think of a way to escape. Then he had an idea.

“Why don’t you have two rabbits instead of having only me for your dinner?” the rabbit asked, slyly. “You are a strong lion. I’m so small. I won’t even fill your stomach.”

“What do you mean?” asked the lion, suspiciously. “I hope this isn’t one of your tricks.”

“No, of course not,” said the rabbit, gathering his courage. “If you don’t get the other rabbit you can always have me for your dinner. You won’t lose anything to have a look. Besides, the other rabbit is even fatter than I am.”

“Where did you see him?” asked the lion, greed overcoming him.

“Well, he was with another lion near the well,” the rabbit went on when he saw the lion falling for his trick.

“What other lion?” asked the lion with a glare. “There is no other lion in this neighbourhood. I hope this isn’t one of your tricks.”
“There is another lion, I tell you,” argued the rabbit. “Of course, if you are afraid, you can just have me for your dinner and half fill your stomach.”

“Me? Afraid? Never!” roared the lion, which made the whole jungle tremble.

The rabbit trembled, too, but he kept up his courage.

“Then, you are going to get the other rabbit?” asked the rabbit, in spite of his trembling.

“Of course. Just show me where the other lion is living and I’ll get the other rabbit from him,” said the lion, confidently puffing out his chest.

The rabbit saw that the lion had really and truly fallen for his trick. So he led the way and the lion followed. They walked for quite a sometime until they came to an old well. Here the rabbit stopped.

“He lives down there,” whispered the rabbit pretending that the other lion would hear him.

“Really? We’ll see about that,” said the lion, again puffing out his chest and leaning over the well wall to see inside.

Sure enough, he saw another lion staring back at him.

Now, what really happened was that, there was water in the well. As you know, when the water is smooth and there are no ripples, you can see the reflections in it, which he thought was another lion. The rabbit jumped on the wall and his reflection was seen in the water as well.

“See, I told you he had a rabbit,” he said.

When the lion saw it, he gave such a terrific loud roar that the rabbit nearly fell into the well with fright. The roar echoed back in the well which he thought was the other lion roaring back at him.

“Look! The other lion wants to fight you,” said the rabbit, pepping the lion up.

This made the lion angrier than ever.

“You say here,” he said, “I’m going to fight that lion. Don’t go away. I’ll be back just now with that rabbit. Slurp! I’m going to have feast tonight!”

The rabbit agreed solemnly and the lion jumped into the well. Splash! But, what’s this? All he could see was water everywhere. He could see neither the lion nor the rabbit that he had seen from the top of the well. He began to drown, because he couldn’t swim.

“Help! Help!” he cried, “I’m drowning! I can’t swim! Get me out of here! Help! Help!”

The rabbit was still sitting on the wall of the well and when he heard the lion shouting for help he began to laugh loudly.

“Goodbye!” said the rabbit. “Enjoy your swim.”

With that he jumped down from the well wall and ran away as fast as he could.

The Tar Baby

Hello, everyone!

The story that I am going to tell you was told to us by our teacher in school when we were little. This was one of my favourite stories. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when my teacher told us.

The Tar Baby

Once upon a time, there was Brer Rabbit and there was Brer Fox. Brer Fox was always trying to catch Brer Rabbit, but Brer Rabbit was very cunning and always got away. One day, Brer Fox decided that it was time he caught Brer Rabbit. So he made a plan. He took some tar and some sand and he made a tar baby. Then he took the tar baby and sat it near a thick bush and he went and hid himself in a thick bush and waited patiently.

Soon Brer Rabbit came along and when he saw the tar baby he stopped.

"Hello! How are you?" greeted Brer Rabbit.

The tar baby did not say anything, of course.

"I said hello," said Brer Rabbit again.

Again, the tar baby did not answer. This made Brer Rabbit angry.

"Who do you think you are?" he said, angrily. "Here I am greeting you and you do not want to answer. How dare you? I'll beat you."

But still the tar baby did not say anything. This made Brer Rabbit so mad with rage that he gave the tar baby a blow! Now, what do you think happened? The tar baby was made of tar and so his paw got stuck to it. All this time Brer Fox was watching from his hiding place gleefully seeing his plan work.

"Let go of me!" said Brer Rabbit, trying to get his paw off.

He couldn't do that of course and in his anger he gave the tar baby another blow with his other paw. As soon as he did that his other paw got stuck to it as well. Now, Brer Rabbit got really frightened. He gave the tar baby a kick and his back paw as well got stuck and in a panic he gave it another kick with his other leg and that got stuck too!

When Brer Fox saw that Brer Rabbit was really and truly stuck, he came out of his hiding place.

"Hello, there!" greeted Brer Fox. "Looks like we really and truly are stuck this time, isn't it?"

With that he picked up Brer Rabbit and took him away. Brer Rabbit pleaded to Brer Fox to let him go but it was no use!

Brer Rabbit had to think fast. Then, he had an idea!

"Brer Fox," he said, "put in the fire or cook me or do anything but do not throw me in that bush. I'm very scared."

Brer Fox did not pay attention at first. But when Brer Rabbit went on pleading to Brer Fox not to throw him in the bush, he became curious. So just to see what would happen, he threw Brer Rabbit in the bush.

As soon as Brer Fox threw Brer Rabbit in the bush he got seperated from the tar baby.

Brer Rabbit came out of the bush laughing!

"Thank you very much, Brer Fox," he said, "I wanted you to throw me in the bush so that I could get seperated from your horrid tar baby. Wish you better luck next time!"

With that he ran away laughing.

Brer Fox stood there in a daze. Then, it dawned on him that Brer Rabbit had cheated him and got away once again!
