THE THIRD MONKEY

My aunt told me this story when I was a little girl. I had really enjoyed it.
I hope you enjoy it just as much as I did.

THE THIRD MONKEY

Once, there were two little monkeys. As they were playing, they found a nice big banana. They both decided to share it. So one of the two monkeys peeled the banana and cut it into two halves. He took one half and gave the other half to the second monkey.

“Your piece is bigger than mine,” protested the second monkey, crossly. “Give me the other piece, I don’t want this one!”

“Certainly not!” said the first monkey. “Why should I give you my piece?”

Now, they started to argue. As they were arguing a third monkey came along. He was passing by and when he heard them arguing, he decided to see what it was all about.

“Hello! What’s the matter? Why are you two arguing?” asked the third monkey.

The second monkey explained how they had found a banana and the first monkey’s piece being bigger than his own.
“Oho! Is that all?” asked the third monkey, when he had heard their story. “I’ll soon fix that. Give me both your pieces.”

He took the pieces and pretended to measure them.

“The second piece is really small,” he said and took a bite out of the first monkey’s piece.

Now, the first monkey protested that his piece had become smaller. So the third monkey took a bite out of the second monkey’s piece. Now, the second monkey protested that his piece had become smaller. So the third monkey took a bite from the first monkey’s piece. It went on like that until there were only tiny bits of pieces left. Since, the two of them were still arguing, the third monkey popped the last bits into his mouth.

The first two monkeys stared at the third monkey in dismay as he swallowed the rest of the banana. Then, it occurred to them that they had been tricked. They were furious but they could do nothing about it!

THE FOX AND THE CROW

THE FOX AND THE CROW

Once, the fox was lying under a tree, feeling very hungry, indeed. He had tried to get something to eat, but had failed. He was lying there now wondering what to do, when suddenly, he saw a crow. He flew to the opposite tree and sat on one of the branches. In his beak he held a nice big juicy piece of meat! The fox’s mouth watered, when he saw it. He began to think of a way to get it. Then, he had an idea.

“Hello, Mr. Crow,” greeted the fox. “Lovely day, isn’t it?”

But the crow only nodded his head in reply and didn’t say anything as he had the piece of meat in his beak.

“My! But you sure do have lovely black feathers,” commented the fox, trying to get the crow to speak.

Again, the crow only nodded his head in reply.

“I’m sure have a lovely voice, too,” went on the fox. “I have never heard you sing. Won’t you sing for me? I’d love to hear you sing.”

The crow was flattered, when he heard the fox praising him. This time, he hesitated unsure of himself.

“Oh, please! Sing to me!” prompted the fox, when he saw the crow hesitate. “I do so want to hear your lovely voice so much, please!”

This time the crow couldn’t resist any more. He opened his beak to sing, forgetting that he had a piece of meat in his beak and it fell on the ground, with a plop!

As soon as it fell the fox jumped up and ran to where it had fallen and gobbled it up!

“Thank you, Mr. Crow!” said the fox. “That was a delicious piece of meat. Goodbye!”

“Hey! That was my piece of meat you just ate,” said the crow, angrily. “Come back here!”

But the fox had already run away and was hiding under a thick bush. The crow searched for him for a while and then with an angry caw he flew away in search of something else to eat.

THE LION AND THE MOUSE

Hi! My name is Yasmin Khatri.

I will be posting children's stories every Monday and Thursday.

I hope you enjoy them just like I enjoy writing them.

This is my first story. It's called 'The lion and the Mouse'.

    Happy reading!

 THE LION AND THE MOUSE

One day, as the lion was out hunting, he caught a mouse. The mouse begged the lion to let him go.

“Why should I let you go?” asked the lion.

“Well, for one thing,” the mouse started to explain. “I am so small. I could hardly make a morsel for you. Also, it could be that one day I could repay your kindness,” said the mouse.

When the lion heard this, it amused him very much and he roared with laughter!

“You, helping me! And how do you think, you, a mere mouse is going to help me, a big lion?” asked the lion in amusement.

The mouse got encouraged at the lion’s mirth.

“I don’t know, but you can never know. Maybe one day you will need my help,” he said in a meek voice.

The lion looked at the frightened meek mouse in amusement.

“Alright, I will let you go just this once. But I warn you, next time I will not let you go,” he said letting the mouse go.

“Oh, thank you very much, kind sir,” said the mouse gratefully, relieved at being spared.

The lion went away, laughing, making the whole jungle shake with his
roaring laughter.

The mouse ran away as fast as he could, happy to be alive.

Now, it so happened that one day as the lion was walking in the jungle, searching for food, he suddenly got trapped in a net set by one of the hunters. The lion roared and struggled to get out of the net. But the more he struggled the more tighter the net got. At last, he gave up.

Now, what happened was that as the lion was roaring, the mouse was passing nearby and heard it. He stopped to hear and recognized the roaring. His first thought was to run away, but then he remember the lion’s kindness and decided to investigate, although, he was scared stiff at the prospect of going to there.

When he reached the lion, he was surprised at what he saw. The lion was trapped in a net and could not get out.

“Don’t worry,” said the mouse. “I will get you out in just a little while, sir!”

With that he began to gnaw at the net, and soon he had made a big hole in it. The lion was able to get out quite easily. The mouse started to run, but the lion stopped him. The mouse stopped, terrified, thinking that now the lion would surely eat him up. But, the lion just went to him and shook hands with him.

“Thank you, so much!” he said, gratefully. “I never thought that you would ever be able to help me. Now, I know that you should never underestimate anybody, however small. I’m sorry I laughed at you that day.”

With that the lion went on his way and the mouse went on his.
